Walking But We've Got Our Bikes - The Story Behind The Song

The year is 2020. The world has gone to pot. The family home is full, and the only escape from the chaos is the simple pleasure of bike rides through the surrounding villages. This is exactly what my brother and I did—just like we did when we were kids.

Walking but We've Got Our Bikes is a song that captures this journey. It begins in 2023, after a solitary drive back to "the spot." Not much had changed. The trees still formed a canopy over the massive log overlooking the fields. The York countryside was as flat as ever. If not for the woodland a field away, you could see for miles.

But something intangible was missing. The whimsy of the spot had faded. Life has a way of moving on, often without you

noticing, and that realization struck me as I sat there looking through the rolled down passenger window of my car. Memories flooded back, transporting me to one of the simplest but best adventures I’ve ever experienced.

23rd June 2020

It was just another day in 2020—they all felt the same. I’d wake up, look outside, and there it was again: sunshine. It had been sunny for what felt like forever. I’d find Owen, head to the garage, grab the bikes, and off we’d go.

The rides were never particularly long, often retracing familiar routes through the villages and countryside we knew so well. But those rides kept us grounded, kept our spirits high. And that was enough.

Our favourite pastime during these rides was "rating the vibe." Sometimes, we’d get so caught up analysing the vibe that we’d forget to simply live in the moment. But that was part of the charm—it was what we loved doing.

On this particular day, we biked to the spot and stayed there for a while, soaking in the tranquillity. When it was time to head back, we decided to prolong the moment. Instead of cycling home, we walked back through the country roads, wheeling our bikes alongside us.

Feeling like we could never top this vibe, in classic Lawrence-and-Owen style, we rated this day a perfect 10.
